Sorry… I couldn’t resist this title since this beautiful wedding took place in Phuket, Thailand.
Sarah-Jayne and Eliot met in Dubai a few years ago. At the time, wee Scot Sarah was a dental hygienist in the British Army based in Germany. She was in Dubai on holiday and – with a little matchmaking from Eliot’s mate, Lucy – met Aussie Eliot. At the Rugby Sevens of all places! Now, for those of you who are not Dubai-natives, let’s just say that if you were to draw up a list of places to meet a potential spouse… erm… The Sevens probably wouldn’t be on it.
But, against all odds, cupid’s bow wound its way around drunken ex-pats, I mean, rugby enthusiasts (in ludicrous fancy dress, no less) and stuck Sarah and Eliot. The rest, as they say, is history.
Who said holiday romances don’t work?!
When your families are on opposite sides of the globe, a destination wedding (somewhere in the middle) is an obvious choice. And The Surin Hotel, Phuket, was a beautiful choice. Not quite in peak season, a relentless rain storm threatened to stop the planned beach wedding all morning. Thankfully it stopped and dried up in time for the gorgeous ceremony, and didn’t start again until the party was safely undercover. Eliot surprised Sarah and the rest of the Scottish clan with a traditional piper – and I’m still not sure where he found him in Thailand.
The speeches contained embarrassment and lovely words in equal measure, as all good wedding speeches should. Then Eliot’s twin brother and best man, Albert, stunned the crowd with a beautiful slideshow of photos of the happy couple, from cute baby shots, to those awkward teen years, to precious moments with loved ones who are no longer here, and finally memories of all of the adventures – and in Sarah’s case, hairstyles – they’ve already had together. The icing on the cake were the video messages from some of those who couldn’t be there for the big day. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Nor was there a dry foot. The monsoon was back in full force but it couldn’t dampen the party spirit.
And so, with a very cute choreographed first dance, the new Mr & Mrs Lombardozzi kicked off the party in style. I have never seen two bigger, more infectious, beaming smiles… I think they should be the ad for Sarah’s Dubai dental practice.
